West African Drumming Ensemble Performs for
Students - 1/22/07
On Friday, January 19th students in the
Upper and Lower schools were treated to a performance by the
female percussion ensemble called Amazones. The group of
master-drummers hails from Guinea, West Africa where women
were forbidden to play these instruments until recently. This
amazing group of women sang songs, danced and played the
traditional percussion instruments of Guinea such as the
djembe, doundoun and balafon. Following the concert, students
were able to briefly visit with the
performers.
Amazones is currently touring the US and
will begin a European tour this summer.
